# Install

> Install CoreAV today, and what comes with the first release.

Today you can only build CoreAV from source. Release binaries and the npm package come with 0.1.0.

## Build from source

You need Rust 1.89 or later ([rustup](https://rustup.rs)), git, and a C compiler for the TLS library that reads `https://` inputs.

1. Clone the repository:

   ```sh theme={null}
   git clone https://github.com/coreav-dev/coreav
   cd coreav
   ```

2. Build and install the `coreav` command:

   ```sh theme={null}
   cargo install --locked --path crates/coreav-cli --profile dist
   ```

   The `dist` profile is the optimized build that CoreAV ships. Cargo puts the binary in `~/.cargo/bin`.

3. Check the installed version:

   ```console theme={null}
   $ coreav --version
   coreav 0.0.1
   ```

This default build has every command except [`thumbnail`](/docs/commands/thumbnail) and [`transcode`](/docs/commands/transcode). Those two need a decoder backend, which you add with a Cargo feature:

```sh theme={null}
cargo install --locked --path crates/coreav-cli --profile dist --features ffmpeg-fallback
```

[Build features](/docs/build-features.md) lists each backend, what it needs on your machine, and the licence notes that come with it.

## Build the Python module

The Python module builds from `crates/coreav-py` with [maturin](https://www.maturin.rs). [Python](/docs/python.md) has the steps.

## Coming with 0.1.0

These are planned for the first release ([the 0.1.0 release issue](https://github.com/coreav-dev/coreav/issues/43)):

* `coreav` binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows on GitHub Releases, with checksums.
* The npm package `coreav`, which installs the native binary where one exists and runs the WebAssembly build elsewhere.

The Python and Rust library packages come in a later release.
