Today you can only build CoreAV from source. Release binaries and the npm package come with 0.1.0.

Build from source

You need Rust 1.89 or later (rustup), git, and a C compiler for the TLS library that reads https:// inputs.
  1. Clone the repository:
  2. Build and install the coreav command:
The dist profile is the optimized build that CoreAV ships. Cargo puts the binary in ~/.cargo/bin.
  3. Check the installed version:
This default build has every command except thumbnail and transcode. Those two need a decoder backend, which you add with a Cargo feature:
Build features lists each backend, what it needs on your machine, and the licence notes that come with it.

Build the Python module

The Python module builds from crates/coreav-py with maturin. Python has the steps.

Coming with 0.1.0

These are planned for the first release (the 0.1.0 release issue):
  • coreav binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows on GitHub Releases, with checksums.
  • The npm package coreav, which installs the native binary where one exists and runs the WebAssembly build elsewhere.
The Python and Rust library packages come in a later release.
